In order to address climate change and promote economic activities that are committed to the conservation of biodiversity in our country, the Amazon Business Alliance will invest more than 100 million soles in sustainable businesses, which will directly benefit the Amazonian populations that safeguard the forests.
Promoted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Government of Canada and Conservation International, the Business Alliance for the Amazon is a new platform that seeks to join efforts of the public and private sector to advance sustainable investments in the Peruvian Amazon, with the aim of contributing to the achievement of national climate goals and the Sustainable Development Goals.
"This platform is a commitment to the Amazon, to its sustainable development, to generate opportunities for economic growth while respecting the environment. We seek to improve the environment for green businesses, so that they can grow," explained Luis Espinel, Vice President in Peru of Conservation International.
WOMEN-LED BUSINESSES
The Alliance proposes an economic development based on the sustainable use of natural resources, hinging on gender, intercultural and rights-based approaches, promoting an adequate relationship with the population, in particular with women and indigenous peoples, to guarantee their effective participation in decision-making and in the creation of relevant and inclusive public policies.
A pillar of the Alliance is to increase women's participation in business, strengthening their economic autonomy in order to achieve a more equal and respectful society. In this sense, the Alliance will encourage women-led businesses, and increase and improve their entrepreneurial capacities.
THE ALLIANCE IS ALREADY WORKING IN THESE REGIONS
With the aim of recovering and restoring more than 20,000 hectares of forest and contributing to the sustainable management of 60,000 hectares of forest, the Amazon Business Alliance is promoting initiatives in the regions of Madre de Dios, San Martín, Huánuco and Ucayali, where Framework Agreements for Inter-institutional Cooperation were executed with the respective regional governments, which will allow the alignment of public and private investment priorities.
The purpose is to facilitate the articulation and generation of synergies, and to strengthen technical and innovation capacities. It also seeks to leverage around 200 million additional soles from the private sector for sustainable businesses.
In the first group of companies that are part of this alliance, Starbucks, the BHP Foundation, Viridis Terra, Aje, Shanantina, Rainforest Expeditions, among others, stand out.
